First time I heard about the US rewards system, it blew my mind. People getting 10x, 20x, sometimes 30x more back on their spend than anywhere outside the US. I wanted in.

Turns out the US rewards system isn't built for people outside the US. It's possible to get in, but there are so many extra hoops to jump through as a non-US citizen. For example, if you spend $50,000 on your card and earn enough points to book a $10,000 flight, that's a 20% return on your spending. You can also take your rewards as cash, but the value is lower — around 2-4%.
